Constitutional Recognition Submission
The YWCA of Canberra strongly believes in the importance of recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Australian Constitution as the first Australians and traditional custodians of our lands. The values that sit behind proposals for constitutional recognition – respect, fairness, equity, diversity and empowerment – reflect the values that guide and inspire the work of the YWCA of Canberra and our approach to reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.
Supporting and participating in the campaign to reform the Australian Constitution to include recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as Australia’s first peoples is an identified action under our new RAP. This submission represents one aspect of this commitment.

Our first RAP was launched at our Annual General Meeting in October 2009.
Reconciliation Action Plan (780 KB)
As affirmed in our statement of values, the YWCA of Canberra is committed to working towards Reconciliation with Indigenous Australians. An integral part of this is developing a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).
A RAP is a tool designed by Reconciliation Australia to help organisations to build positive relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the wider Australian community. It provides us with a framework for the future, detailing steps and priorities to achieve equality for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Our a RAP formalises the YWCA of Canberra’s commitment to Reconciliation with Indigenous Australians and identifies clear actions and targets to meet in this work.
A Reconciliation Australia registered RAP has seven key elements and must incorporate the following:
1. embraced across all levels of the organisation
2. Indigenous collaboration
3. specific actions (relationships, respect, opportunities)
4. measurable targets
5. timelines
6. annual public reporting on progress
7. annual refresh of RAP.
The actions emerging from the RAP are framed around three themes:
- relationships
- respect
- oportunities.
As part of our work towards Reconciliation, the YWCA of Canberra participates in and supports NAIDOC Week .
