Are you from a culturally or linguistically diverse background?
Are you an Indigenous Australian?

You are invited to register as a Bicultural Support Worker
in the Bicultural Support Pool.

The Bicultural Support Pool (BSP) is a register of workers from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds employed on a casual basis to work in child care settings.

Bicultural Support Workers are employed for periods of time to provide support to children’s services staff with the aim of successfully including Indigenous children, or children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, into child care programs.

The responsibility of Bicultural Support Workers may include:

  • providing advice to children’s services staff on culturally appropriate practices
  • assisting staff to develop a greater understanding of relevant cultural issues
  • assisting staff to explore diverse cultures through language, stories, music, play, food and dance
  • providing information on child-rearing practices in other cultures, and supporting the implementation and understanding of particular cultural practices
  • assisting staff to successfully communicate with children, for instance, by advising on words or phrases which may help to facilitate communication with the child
  • onsite or telephone assistance to families and staff through the child care enrolment process, for instance, interpreting meetings between parents and staff, verbal translation of enrolment documents or service procedures, and so on.

The YWCA of Canberra is engaged to recruit, train and coordinate the Bicultural Support Pool. People registered on the Bicultural Support Pool will receive induction training as well as guidance and support from the Bicultural Support Pool Coordinator and on-going training opportunities in the child care vocation.

If you are interested in registering as a Bicultural Support Worker in the Bicultural Support Pool please contact the Program Coordinators Pam or Gordana on 02 6175 9900 or email bsp@ywca-canberra.org.au
