CALL FOR NOMINATION FOR THE YWCA OF CANBERRA BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Do you have skills to support the strategic direction of a progressive Canberra based service organisation?

Do you want to make a contribution to a leading worldwide women’s organisation?

Do you want to develop your Board and leadership skills?

The YWCA is one of the world’s largest women’s organisations, representing over 25 million women in 125 countries. In the ACT, we have been providing services since 1929 and now work in the areas of children’s services, youth services, community development, housing and accommodation, training and advocacy and policy development. The organisation is governed by a Board of Directors, made up of 12 women from across the community who are elected by the membership to lead the strategic direction of the organisation.

In the lead up to our Annual General Meeting which will be held on 13 October 2008, we are calling for nominations to our Board of Directors as well as applications for our Board Traineeship program. This year, we will have a number of vacancies on the Board of Directors, in addition to positions available on our Board Traineeship Program. We are particularly interested in identifying young women (aged 30 or under) who may have an interest in becoming involved in our organisation, as well as women who might have some legal expertise.

These opportunities provide a great opportunity to take a leading role in an innovative and progressive organisation as well as developing skills and networks that can last a life time.

Board Positions: This year we have six positions available on the Board. As a company limited by guarantee, board members become the legal Company Directors of the organisation. The key role of the Board is to set the strategic direction for the YWCA of Canberra. It is also the legally responsible body for the organisation ensuring that accountability measures are met. The Board is made up of voting members of the YWCA of Canberra and is answerable to the membership. As an organisation with a commitment to young women and to women in leadership, 30% of the Board are 30 years of age or less.

Board Traineeships: As an organisation with an interest in women in leadership we have created a Board Traineeship Program. The Traineeship Program offers women the opportunity to experience the discussion and decisions of a Board of Governance without the responsibility of being Directors. These Traineeships are particularly aimed at women who have had no or little Board experience to date. We currently offer three traineeships each year.
