Why Young Women Get Involved and Stay Involved:
A Handbook for Community Organisations on
How to Engage Young Women

WomenSpeak worked in partnership with the YWCA of Canberra to develop a handbook for organisations who are interested in increasing their engagement with young women, Why Young Women Get Involved and Stay Involved: A Handbook for Community Organisations on how to Engage Young Women.

The resource is free and user-friendly, and provides practical tips and suggestions on how to:

  • identify and overcome organisational barriers to young women’s involvement
  • identify and recruit young women into organisations
  • create and maintain opportunities for young women’s involvement in organisations
  • assist organisations to build a productive relationship with young women that is mutually beneficial
  • develop strategies to support young women and maintain their engagement over time.

The handbook draws on the input of young women speaking about why they get involved and stay involved, and on feedback from community organisations about how young women can make a positive difference within organisations.

Included within the resource are self-assessment tools to help organisations assess their connection with young women, and case studies of organisations that are successfully engaging young women.

The WomenSpeak network is a group of 36 predominantly national women’s organisations, including YWCA Australia. These organisations work together around issues of human rights, youth participation and diversity. One of four national secretariats for women, the WomenSpeak network reflects the diversity of the vibrant women’s movement in Australia. For more information see www.ywca.org.au/projects/womenspeak.
