Women Out Front

We are delighted to announce the schedules for the 2012 Women Out Front Leadership Series. The Women Out Front series is an initiative of the YWCA of Canberra designed to develop women's skills and confidence to take on leadership roles within their community. This initiative is to promote women influencing, deciding and leading.

This workshop series is an excellent opportunity to enrich and shape your leadership journey. Women Out Front is comprised of three elements: a leadership forum, young women's leadership workshops, and women on boards workshops.

1. Leadership Forum

This forum provides an opportunity for you to learn from a prominent woman leader and reflect on women’s challenges as decision makers. At the end of the speech, there will be a forum for you to ask questions to the speaker and network with audience members over drinks and nibbles. The Forum will be held in June 2012.

2. Young Women’s Leadership Workshop

This all day workshop is delivered biannually and aimed at emerging women leaders in our community. Topics of the workshop include exploring women’s leadership, values based leadership, identifying your strengths and on making your next move. In addition, inspiring women leaders will give speeches about their experiences and leadership stories. You will have an opportunity to ask questions and have discussions. The dates for 2012 are:
  • 18 May
  • 28 September

3. Women on Boards Workshop
The Women on Boards workshops are tailored to build the capacity and confidence of women who are Board members or are interested in becoming Board and committee members. The Women on Boards workshops consist of Governance and Finance Workshops. The workshops are held twice a year after work hours and facilitated by Board members of the YWCA of Canberra who are experts in these areas. The governance workshops cover roles, responsibilities and expectation of Boards, women on Boards, different governance models and their application. The finance workshops equip women with basic skills in organisation models, understanding financial statements, ratio analysis and internal controls. The schedules for the 2012 Governance and Finance workshops are as follow:
  • Governance
             • 15 March
             • 23 August

  • Finance
             • 22 March
             • 28 August
Don’t miss these fantastic opportunities to develop your leadership skills, knowledge and confidence. Put these dates in your calendar and register your interest at canberra@ywca-canberra.org.au.

Women Out Front Leadership Forum 2011

The 2011 Women Out Front leadership forum was held at the ACT Legislative Assembly with ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher as key note speaker; and ActewAGL's Ayesha Razzaq, Deloitte Access Economics' Lynne Pezzullo and YWCA of Canberra Board Trainee Jac Torres-Gomez speaking on the interactive panel.  The event was designed to inspire women and get them invigorated about their own personal leadership journeys.

Women Out Front Leadership Forum 2010

The 2010 leadership forum was sponsored by Australian Institute of Management, with the theme "Women in Transition". Clare Martin, Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Council of Social Service, reflected on her leadership journey and her experiences with life and career transitions in the keynote address.

Women Out Front Leadership Forum 2009

The focus for the 2009 Leadership Forum was "International Advocacy and Global Women's Leadership". We were privileged to welcome Libby Lloyd, former Chair of the National Council to Reduce Violence Against Women, as MC, and Susan Brennan, World YWCA President, as keynote speaker. Libby and Susan inspired local women with their stories or women's contributions accross the globe, ans spoke with great insight about advocacy for women in the international arena.

Women Out Front Leadership Forum 2008

The theme of the 2008 Leadership Forum was "Learning from Indigenous Women Leaders". Our keynote speaker was Dr Jackie Huggins, Deputy Director of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit at the University of Queensland. In 2001 Jackie received an Order of Australia for her services to the Indigenous community, particularly her work with reconciliation, literacy, women’s issues and social justice. Dr Huggins gave an inspiring as well as entertaining presentation, and participants valued the insightful forum discussion and the networking opportunity after the forum.

Women as Decision Makers 2007

The 2007 Women As Decision Makers (the former title of the series) Leadership Forum presented three Canberra women running in the 2007 Federal Election, who shared their insights about being a woman in politics. ACT Greens candidate Kerrie Tucker, ACT Labor Party candidate Senator Kate Lundy, and ACT Liberal Party candidate Jacqui Myers, explored the challenges and opportunities they have encountered as women in political life. The forum highlighted the importance of having more women in parliament, to bring forward women’s perspectives and to fight for the injustices that might not be visible if not for the presence of women.
